Police Targeting Distracted Drivers

Evesham Township Police are stepping up enforcement on distracted drivers. Throughout April, police officers are targeting drivers who use hand-held cell phones and send text messages while driving. The enforcement is part of the state’s UDrive UText UPay program.

The initiative does not target drivers who are using hands-free devices, such as bluetooth. Police emphasize hands-free means both hands are on the steering wheel while driving. New drivers with provisional licenses are not permitted to use hand-free devices while driving. From January 1, 2017 to March 15, 2018, Evesham Police statistics show there were 1,643 roadway collisions, with 782 relating to distracted driving.  48-percent of all accidents on Evesham Roadways are a result of Distracted Driving.
